Abstract

The distinctives between charismatic and transforming leadership have been the topic of research in the fields of leadership, business, and organizational behaviour; however a complete understanding concerning these leadership approaches remains to be fully established. This article brings an additional psychological component to the existing research, specifically focusing on the self-perception (persona) of the leader. Brief consideration is given to the difference between the way the term charismatic is used within the research literature from how it is used within its biblical roots. Drawing from research in the fields of psychology and leadership, this paper discusses what the research has to say concerning the use of the term charisma for both charismatic and transformational leadership prototypes and briefly identifies some of the consequent differences in influence processes between leader and follower.
