Abstract

This research article investigates the experience of female leaders in the Christian missions movement Youth With A Mission (YWAM), within the context of YWAM North America. Although the beliefs and values of YWAM clearly affirm female leadership, findings show women can be limited in their leadership at North American YWAM bases. Through ten interviews and two surveys totaling 86 respondents from Mexico, Canada, and the USA, this MA research project investigation found several factors potentially contributing to female leadership limitations, including interdenominational beliefs, decentralized structure, a lack of leadership opportunity, and relationship-based discipleship. The author suggests ideas for assessment to evaluate how hospitable North American YWAM bases are in practice to female leadership.
